Kurt Jay Bertels

Kurt Jay Bertels is one of the most exciting young wildlife photographers on the scene today. He has an artistic eye and a technical ability far beyond the average. His love of African wildlife and his incredible insight into animal behavior has helped to create a stunning collection of wildlife images.

Kurt started taking photographs of wildlife while still at school. Many safaris to game reserves and wilderness areas in southern Africa during his school years and his deep love of African wildlife, prompted him to follow a career in game ranging.

After finishing school he completed his studies in Game Management in Johannesburg and Mpumalanga, South Africa and was then employed as a full time game ranger at select game reserves in Mpumalanga and Limpopo. Kurt is currently a free-lance photographer and also provides regular courses on Wildlife Photography.

In a relatively short time, Kurt has been able to build a substantial portfolio of wildlife behavior images, initially on print and slide transparency and later in digital images. His first digital camera was a Canon EOS 300D with a Canon 75-300mm lens. He currently uses a Canon EOS 20D with a Cannon 100-400mm lens and 2x converter.

Kurt's images have been published in several print magazines. He has continued to deliver high quality and innovative images. So much so, that he was declared the Getaway Wildlife Photographer of the Year at the 2006 Getaway - Fuji Wildlife & Environment Photographic Competition held in Johannesburg. Kurt was also recognized as the second runner-up in the Birds section and also received 6 further commendations in various categories. He has also been awarded a first and been placed several times in the Image Club competition which is published in South African Country Life.
